A Beginner’s Guide to UTV Maintenance
If you own a UTV, you probably want to protect your investment so that it lasts for as long as possible. That means you’ll need to keep on top of routine maintenance. For some people, even basic maintenance can seem like a hassle, which is why we have created this guide to help you keep on top of it. With a few simple steps, you can avoid the worst problems that might come your way. And remember, if you ever find an issue or think there might be a problem that is bigger than you can handle, bring your UTV to our service department at Corpus Christi Cycle Plaza.
Check the Oil
Maintaining the engine oil is crucial to the performance of your UTV. The better you are at keeping on top of the oil, the longer your engine will last. Start by removing the dipstick and wiping it clean. Then, re-insert the dipstick and take it out to check the oil line against the measuring marks at the end of the dipstick. If you need oil, top it off with the same type of oil that’s already in the engine. If the oil is dark and sludgy, replace your oil altogether.
Inspect the Spark Plugs
Spark plugs are key to power and fuel efficiency. Checking your spark plugs takes a little bit of know-how. First, you’ll need to unhook the lead that supplies electricity to the spark plug. Then, use a spark plug wrench to remove it from the engine. Inspect the spark plug and ensure it’s not covered in oil, damaged, or blown out. If your spark plugs are old, it may be time to replace them. When you reinstall, tighten your spark plug to the appropriate level to ensure it won’t come loose.
Maintain Your Tires
You should check the tires every single time you ride your UTV. Even if it’s just a quick walk-around to make sure your tires all appear equally inflated, a tire check can save you from a crash or a costly repair. Make sure to regularly test the air pressure in your tires with an air pressure gauge. If you keep your tires at an even pressure, they’ll give you better performance and better fuel efficiency.
