History
Indian created its first production motorcycle in 1902, which pioneered the company’s 1.75 horsepower single-cylinder engine. The design was a success, with its sleek frame, chain drive, and stylish lines. It was only a year later that an Indian bike set the world motorcycle speed record.
Like most American companies, Indian struggled during the Depression and World War II, but after some reorganization and new owners, the company re-emerged at the end of the war, purchased by a group led by Ralph B. Rogers, who focused the company’s efforts on building lightweight motorcycles. This group would be the first of many to take on the Indian Motorcycle® brand name over the years, each of which would put its own stamp on the brand.
Indian Motorcycle® was purchased by Polaris Industries in 2011, and in 2013, the company’s model offerings expanded to ten. Today’s lineup of Indian Motorcycles® is the best it’s ever been, focused on speed, agility, power, and style, and echoing the brand’s great history and legacy.
